The firm is delighted to announce that its founder, Charles Ferguson, who was Scotland’s youngest Solicitor Advocate when he obtained Rights of Audience in Criminal Matters before the High Court and Privy Council, has now been awarded the prestigious Master of Laws Degree from the United Kingdom’s University of the Year, Strathclyde University.
Charles gained his Masters Degree with Distinction.
His dissertation on presenting and cross-examining identification evidence gained him a Distinction.
The LLM course in Advocacy was developed by Dame Elish Angiolini QC, former Lord Advocate, and one of the most respected figures in the British Legal Establishment. Students studied major aspects of the discipline from forensic advocacy in criminal and civil law, mediation, as well as the fundamentals of persuasion and negotiations. The course aimed to look at advocacy from a range of angles including the construction and presentation of an argument and the psychology of persuasion.
The effects of rhetoric, voice, mechanisms for presentation of evidence and the ability of the listener to absorb and be influenced in a number of different contexts was examined.
The University describes this course as a revolutionary training programme and drew students from all over the world. The course contributors included Judge Mark Drummond from the USA, the Rt. Hon. Lord Boyd of Duncansby QC, Professor Jim Fraser – Director of the Centre for Forensic Medicine, Marsha Hunter USA, The Rt. Hon. Frank Mulholland QC – Lord Advocate, The Rt Hon Lord Reid – Justice of the Supreme Court, Professor Charles Rose UC, James Woolfe QC and International Law expert and academic Gary Born – widely regarded as the worlds pre-eminent authority on international commercial arbitration and international litigation.
